Well I have not told too many people about this, because I was scared they would think that I was losing my mind. But what I am about to tell you actually happened. My fiancé was killed in an automobile accident In September of 1990. It was was very devastating as we were very close.

On New Year's Eve a few months after his death I was persuaded by his brother to come out to the bar for awhile and celebrate the holiday. Reluctantly I agreed, I stayed for awhile but was so overcome by grief that I decided to leave and go to my fiancé's home, to see if his mother was there and spend New Year's Eve with her. I rode out to his house and It was a little before or either after midnight. I soon discovered that nobody was home. He lived way out in the country on a gravel road. So it was very dark and very quiet. I decided to go in the house and go in his room seeking a little comfort by just being near where he used to be. I went in the house and eventually came out on the porch and started crying.

I can remember how quiet it was but the wind was blowing really hard that night for some reason, which I thought was odd.
I THEN HEARD SOMEONE CALL MY NAME. I thought that it was my mind playing tricks on me, because no one was there except me, but I heard it again, like a whisper but very plain. I got goose bumps and my hair stood straight up on my arms. It really scared me, so I ran off of the porch, jumped in my car and left.

After I thought about it, I was so heartbroken by his loss that I really think that it was my fiancé him trying to comfort me and letting me know that he was still around. A few weeks before he passed he told me that he never wanted to leave his home and wanted to be buried beside me. I will never forget what happened that night and I know in some strange way that he is with me.

I have had several strange things happen since his death, enough to make me believe that you pass over to another place, but your spirit lingers on and stays close to those you love. I will try to relay a few more of my incidents in the future.

Thank you for your web site, at least I know now that some people have had similar experiences like mine and maybe I'm really not crazy at all!

I'm glad to know that this website provides comfort to those who have experienced paranormal events in their lives. Hopefully we provide some answers for you.

I was in Puerto Rico about 6 years ago and took a private tour up a mountain to the rainforest. There is a narrow winding path that the driver takes you up, barreling at around 40 miles an hour and beeping around corners for oncoming traffic. I knew that if we were to hit anything we would certainly go plunging off the road, so in my opinion the beeping was just cheap theatrics to try and pacify us.

Anyways, on the top of this mountain you can see almost all of Puerto Rico on a clear day, which this particular day happened to be. There were trails that we were allowed to go down, and a light house that we were allowed to climb up. We had a set time when we would all meet back at the bus, so we set off on our own to look around.

I’ve always hated being told to stay on a path, I figure there are probably things off the path that are much more interesting, so disregarding our orders and the fact that we were in a foreign tropical rainforest that probably held more insects and snakes than are actually identified in modern science, I convinced my friends that we needed to set out and form our own expedition.

There were so many gorgeous flowers and plants like you wouldn’t believe. Not a lot of animals, though. I was disappointed; I really wanted to see something that I’d never seen before. I would have settled for a damn squirrel! All we got were gnat type bugs, and a few large, winged, buzzy things that would swoop down by your ear just long enough to make you swat at it & then fly off. I took so many pictures. There was a waterfall that we were able to climb to the top of, really something to see. We knew we had to start heading back, so we got our things gathered and we made for the bus.

We weren’t that far out, so I knew we could easily find the same “path” that we came from. I could recognize some landmarks, so I knew we were ok. I am part Seneca Indian after all!

As we were walking, there was a loud screech to the left of us and some brush rustling starting from the left and moving in front of us. I immediately thought, ‘Well finally we’re going to see some animals!”

The only thing I did see was a huge bird, torn to shreds about 5 feet in front of us. At this point I knew that we had to hurry because there was something hungry and apparently very powerful in close proximity to us.

It didn’t take us long to get the rest of the way back, and we were all in a panicked mood because of what we just experienced.

Everyone gathered the pack lunches that the tour provided and we scouted our spots on the grass. I can talk to a stick, so naturally I started talking to the bus driver and asking about the area, this and that. It wasn’t long before he started giving us all sorts of information that you’re not going to find in a guide book. He told us that on the other side of the mountain was a US government manned post. No one could get near it, it was heavily guarded, and that’s why they like us to stay on the paths. (At that point I guessed we had been silently busted). No one really knew what the post was used for, but it was rumored that it was used for extra terrestrial stuff. There was a gigantic satellite dish camouflaged in the trees, which we actually did see on our way out.

I asked if he believed that’s what it was used for and he said yes, but he also thought they were watching for La Chupa Cabra because of all the animals that were torn to bits on peoples farms. He said that sometimes there was nothing left of an animal, like it had been thrown through a thrasher. Other times, it would appear that the animal was asleep, and when the farmer would take a closer look he would notice that the animal was completely drained of its blood.

I didn’t ask too much after that, but I knew we were all thinking the same thing.

We couldn’t wait to get down from there!

I usually do not include anything but pure ghost stories. But I do like to encourage foreign ghost stories and so decided to break my own unofficial rule and throw in the story of the puerto rican chupa cabra!

Dead Man Knocking....

When my older sister was a teenager, she had a really scary thing happen to her. She was home alone for a while and she was watching TV. Then, she heard the front door bell ring and went to answer it. When she opened the door, she saw a man standing there looking at her and then just vanished in front of her! My sister just screamed and was terrified! She called her brother to come home and he had to leave work early. She just could not stand the idea of being Alone!

When our parents and the rest of us came home, Nancy was still scared even though she was not alone! Our mother had to calm her down and stay with her awhile. Nancy told what she saw at the front door earlier and then not long after that, there was a phone call from a friend of my parents.

This friend told my mom and dad, another friend of there's was killed in a car accident earlier that evening! (I forget the persons name). That's what Nancy seen just as he was dying! She told what he looked like, too. And, it was absolutely HIM!

Was your parent's home a place the departed had visited prior to his death? I'm trying to figure out why the spirit would have gone to your home rather than his own. Thanks for the story!

At Peace....

Back in 1990, I lost my fiancé in a motor vehicle accident. We were very close and his death was very devastating to me. I was very distraught after hearing of his death and after crying myself to sleep, I had a very vivid dream, well almost like a vision.

It was so real to me that I can remember everything down to the last detail. He walked into my room, sat down on my bed, took my hand and told me that "it was alright that he was at peace". I remember vividly what he was wearing, a light blue button-down shirt and blue jeans. Anyway the next morning when I awoke I told my mother that he had come to me that night, but I assured myself that surely it only had to be a dream.

About an hour later his mother called and said that she had picked out what they were going to bury him in. HIS LIGHT BLUE BUTTON DOWN SHIRT AND HIS BLUE JEANS, exactly what he was wearing in my dream.

Well this really freaked me out. I believe that love can cross to bonds of death to bring comfort and I will always believe that he came to me that night to let me know that he was okay.

What a comforting experience you had! Thank you for your submission to the Barrens.

One night I was going for a walk. I live out in the country and I am a cop, so I had my gun on. As I was walking I thought I heard someone behind me. When I would stop they would stop. Finally I drew my gun and yelled, "Sir, Who's there?!"  There was no answer.  When I was about home, and getting ready to walk up on my porch, I saw a shadow of a figure behind me. It appeared to be male and I did not see it's face. I have never seen the figure again.

Very interesting! Did you get a particular "vibe" as to "who" it was following you?  The fact that the apparition did not have a face is very important. Dark figures without faces or with only eyes floating in black are considered evil by many who have had experiences with them.  Lucky you were merely followed!
